The code is applicable to buildings or complexes having conditioned area of 1000 m2 or more. The code is presently under voluntary adoption in the state. This code would become mandatory as and when it is notified by the state government in the official Gazette under clause(p) of section 14 or clause(a) of section 15 of the Energy conservation Act 2001 (52 of 2001).

This code is being framed to suit the regional and local climatic conditions of the state of Karnataka. The compliance requirements of the code will be made flexible enough to allow architects and engineers the ability to comply with code and meet the specific needs of their projects according to the climatic conditions of the site.

The overall objective of the code is to provide technical details for the architects & engineers to apply energy conservation principles and techniques in their designs for new buildings as well as for alteration to existing buildings.

The provisions of the code would apply to:

• Building envelopes except for unconditioned storage spaces or warehouses.
• Mechanical systems and equipment, including heating, ventilating, and air condition, (HVAC)
• Service hot water heating
• Interior and exterior lighting
• Electrical power and motors

The provisions of the code may not apply to :

• Buildings that do not use either electricity or fossil fuel
• Equipment and portions of building systems that use energy primarily for manufacturing processes.
